I'm Jonathan - I created VirtualFlight.Online, and continue to tinker with it as the community grows.
I grew up through the late 1980s playing on the first 8 bit and 16 bit simulators - then on a PC in the 1990s. I think I've owned just about every version of Flight Simulator since version 2 for the Atari ST (back when it was developed by Sublogic). I also had a copy of Jet (who remembers that!) - the fast jet simulator developed on the same engine. I've also tinkered with lots of other sims over the years - TFX, Falcon, DCS, and many others - but I invariably come back to Flight Simulator. For a couple of years I flew X-Plane and P3D week-in, week-out, but then MSFS came along and that was the end of that.
I started VirtualFlight.Online just to create a community - not long after Flight Simulator was released I developed "Transmitter" (the little program that shows where you are on LittleNavMap), and started organising regular group flights. In mid 2022 I scratched a long standing itch and started the airline too. I thought we might get 30 or 40 pilots. I got that wrong!
Anyway - in the daytime I work as a software and web developer for a big company that build systems for bigger companies. You might have even seen and used some of the stuff I've worked on - I'll never tell you where though.
If you read this far, you probably deserve a medal of some sort.
This is all my fault :)
Hi,
I am also a software developer most of the time (do some building maintenance costing as well) who started flight simulation on one of the original IBM XT pcs around 1989 I think, which had a 4 number serial code and on which I played playing Falcon after hours in the office. Since then I have played most of the military simulators with my all time favourite being Red Baron. The graphics were very basic but the game play I thought was amazing. Falcon 4 is another favourite with its dynamic missions. I always kept away from the civils stuff until a year ago and now I am hooked on them.
Making the leap from MSFS 2020 to 2024, as despite the glitches, it is the way forward for me I think.
Currently on my third trip round the globe in real time stopping at some favourite airports, but mostly new ones.
VirtualFlight.Online has given me a sort of purpose to my simulated flying and was worried that the issues with MSFS 2024 would kill it dead, but fortunately Jonathon and the team have managed to give it new life and I am very grateful to all involved.
I am hoping that this forum takes off as I am not a fan of Discord but it will be what it will be I guess.
Happy flying all.
Tim
